Famed for their nutty flavour and papery skins, Comber Earlies (new season potatoes) were awarded Protected Geographic Indication status in 2012 which means that the potatoes can only be marketed as Comber Earlies if they have been grown in and around a specified geographical area around Comber.
To welcome the arrival of the first crop of potatoes, Comber Chamber of Commerce organised a Comber Earlies Day on Saturday 19 June 2021. Helping to launch the special day, Comber Potato Queen, Kim Armstrong, said, “ Comber folk love their spuds! My favourite way to enjoy these golden nuggets is to steam them, add butter, salt and pepper and sprinkle chopped scallions over the top.”
The programme included a Scavenger Hunt for children and cafes and restaurants in the town added special Comber Earlies dishes to their menus. The Farm Shop ran a competition to guess the number of potatoes in a bag and provided a ‘selfie board’ for customers to take photographs and post them up on Facebook.
